Lyric quiz

Well, why not?

One point for song title, one song for artist - original artist, most prominent, one I'm not aware of or anything else fun, in the case of the ones that have been covered.

1. By day I strangle chickens, trapped in my own bad looks

2. People say that you'll die faster than without water

3. I thank you for those items that you sent me - the monkey, and the plywood violin

4. Did you hear about the guy in New York whose dick fell off in the bath after he shot it full of coke? It's OK to run out of butter in Zambia - just smear squashed caterpillars on your toast. Waiter, there's a terrorist in my soup. Which came first, Max Headroom or Gerald Ford? Are you a man or are you a mouse? If you love your fun - die for it!

5. Danny Baker! Danny Baker! Danny Baker! Danny Baker!
Danny Baker! Danny Baker! Danny Baker! Danny Baker!

6. Well, that's right! That's what I was told, anyway. And picking your feet 'till they bleed may only be the half of it.

7. I don't know why I feel this way. The sky is purple, and things go right every day.

8. What did you say you'd find?
Then come, come, come, get the hell inside
You can close your eyes
Well, you might as well commit suicide.
[NB - I understand this lot never actually told anyone their lyrics and were a bit indistinct. This sounds about right, though]

9. Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery; None but ourselves can free our minds.

10. He's the hairy-handed gent who ran amok in Kent. Lately he's been overheard in Mayfair.

11. England, 1936, in the grip of the sabbath day.

12. This land is made for you and me.

13. The polaroids that hold us together will surely fade away.

14. Don't pierce your face. It will only look like someone's tipped the fishing-tackle bucket over your head.

15. I have a fish nailed to a cross on my apartment wall

16. Won't somebody sign my release?

17. You did a perfect job last night. You shaved your legs and you washed your bike.

18. My hair was scorched by swirling flame
my eyes grew dim, my eyes grew blind
death came came and turned by bones to dust
and that was scattered by the wind.

19. James Joyce is fucking my sister

20. Trying to breathe some life into a letter, losing hope we'll ever meet again.

21. Oh darkness filled the sky as pools of water filled your eyes; they sparkled like phosphorescence in the bay.

1. Foetus - Verklemmt
4. Lard - Mate, Spawn and Die
15. Throwing Muses - Fish
19. Therapy? - (Argh. Never did get the track names straight on the first two albums.) Potato Junkie, maybe.

Oh dear, that's poor. I think I've done better on Simon's.

Hey, this is fun.

5 is "Dethink to Survive" by Mclusky. 17 is "Olympic Cyclist" by Ballboy.

7. Shine on - House of Love... and Apoptygma Berzerk Covered it... got quite high in the German Alt charts as well :)
Indeed. Possible bonus point to come there, if I'm feeling generous. I'm not aware of anyone else having covered it.
I wonder how many of these are horribly, painfully obscure...? ;P

The only ones I could get were:

3. Leonard Cohen - First We Take Manhattan

6. Nomeansno, right? "I Think You Know"?

9. Bob Marley - Redemption Song?

10. Warren Zevon - Werewolves of London

12. Er...this lyric is from This Land Is Your Land, but you probably have some other song in mind.

15. Throwing Muses - Fish

19. Therapy? - Potato Junkie.

Not even a single one is horribly painfully obscure.

6. - Right people, different song.

12. - No, that's the song I was after. And it's by . . . ?
9 - Warren Zevon, 'Werewolves of London'
12 - Woody Guthrie, 'This Land Is Our Land'
14 - Billy Bragg, 'St Swithin's Day'

I'll get back to you on 9 and 16, which I'm sure I know.
3: Leonard Cohen, and I can't remember the song... is it Take This Waltz?
12: This land is your land, no idea who by.
5: sounds like it ought to be Half Man Half Biscuit.
So much more interesting reading than the 'goffik' ones. Care to add some more just for general delectation? I'm much better at intros myself - Pyro's the lyrics man : )
3. Leonard Cohen: First We Take Manhattan (and it's "sent me", not "brought".

4. Is that something by Jello Biafra? Maybe the Lard track to which Fiona visibly refers.

9. Bob Marley: Redemption Song.

10. Warren Zevon: Werewolves of London.

12. Woody Guthrie: This Land is Your Land.

1. Verklemmt, Foetus
2. Lies, The Arcade Fire
3. First we take Manhattan, L Cohen.
4. The power of Lard, Lard.
5. Everyday I start to ooze, No Means No.

I'll stop theer because I don't know anything, but Google is pretty clued up. :0
I can't place it right now.

How's your folk music?

14 did raise a laugh

It stays that silly all the way through.
Basically, I suck. 3 is Leonard Cohen's 'First We Take Manhatten'. 4 is Lard, 'The Power Of Lard'. 9 sounds like Marley, but I don't have a clue about the song. 10 is Warren Zevon, 'Werewolves of London'. 19 is the only one I've listened to recently, and that's Therapy?'s 'Potato Junkie'. Any other's you'd expect me to know?
That's not doing badly.

9 is indeed him.

Others? Nothing definite. Potentially 4 or 5.
