According to this BBC story, a fossil millipede found not far from Aberdeen is the oldest known fossil of a land animal.

To put it another way, hundreds of millions of years ago, primitive creatures pulled themselves out of the primordial slime just outside Stonehaven.

This would not amaze you if you've ever been to Stonehaven.

So rude. And Stonehaven's got such a lovely castle too (but not a whole lot else if memory serves). Still, no surprise primordial beasties only made it as far as the beach - I'd take one look at those cliffs and the 'orrible looking Scots on them and slither back into the sea myself : P
